Description

chinese ink painting on rice paper.

caption on the painting:
你侬我侬
辛卯年三月初九

"you love me and i love you"
the year of xinmao, third month day nine.
(according to chinese lunar calendar)

the origin of the verse in the caption is a very interesting story.
the famous calligrapher of the yuan dynasty zhao meng fu(赵孟頫) desired a second wife, in reply which his wife wrote him a poem:
你侬我侬,忒煞情多;情多处,热如火;把一块泥,捻一个你,塑一个我,将咱两个一齐打碎,用水调和;再捻一个你,再塑一个我。我泥中有你,你泥中有我;我与你生同一个衾,死同一个椁。
'you love me and i love you, what a enviable romance;
where love deepens, it's hot as fire.
hold a handful of earth, and mould a 'you', sculpt a 'me'.
shatter us to powder and mix with water.
again, mould a 'you' and sculpt a 'me'.
now in my soil there is you, and in your soil there is me.
you and i were born a same cradle,
we will die in a common grave.'

and with this poem, the calligrapher's wife won her husband's heart and he never had another wife.

whimsical and mysterious, the owls are well depicted as the creatures of the night.
