a trio of chinese ink paintings on Xuan paper, size 40cmx 75cm.
commissioned by Geoff and Lesly Broome.

the creatures and plants are chosen to match the three qualities and the seasons, each with its respective 7 words' verse to convey the blessings and well-wishing.
the chinese captions read:
and their translations:
magpie and plum blossoms declare a glad tidings!
dragonfly and lotus endure a sizzling summer...
pine tree and cranes dwell together a long lifetime.

the other columns are the date when the paintings are made and my alias as well as signature seal.

by #dALinkSystem, let me introduce to you two masters of chinese ink painting here in dA.

~Dragon-Koi and ~Engifer

no matter how powerful digital painting program can become and how close they could mimic paint, they can never do the same thing like water and soot roaming freely on xuan paper.
i believe. :)

Wow, lovely brush painting skills! I agree with you about how digital painting still cannot capture some traditional effects quite right. At least, it is super difficult to mimic real paper and watercolor. The three panels are a great idea!

It's such a beautiful way to show the world of the traditional way of Eastern Art. I like the way you put the cranes and the birds, perhaps (for me anyway) I'd like the dragonflies a little bit more expressive pink because to me they seem to go to the background as you actually wanted them to be infront, no? But I like it a lot! With what pencil did you make it? Or did you had serveral?

this is done entirely by brush and ink only, no pencil used. no sketching is required for chinese ink painting. :)

"for comment/critique contest, december 2012"

The composition of this piece makes good use of the space provided. It does not need any words to explain to the audience that this piece shows that the "magpie and plum blossoms declare a glad tidings!". This piece of art can also be interpreted as one bird calling and the other bird replying,I guess it is the composition of the birds that attracts my attention. The cherry blossoms in this piece added the right amount of pink/ red for it to stand out and catch your audiences attention. The bird at the bottom that has its wings spanned out has good detail of the feathers and lovely shading where it is needed, it definitely shows beauty of flying birds
The detail of the lotus leaves are amazing, the different shades of green makes the leaves look realistic. The composition of the painting is as good as the Faith piece. My suggestion would be to make the lotus flower pink rather than white for it to stand out as the lotus flower seems to blend in with the leaves almost as if it was hidden with the white parts of the leaves, plus it would add a bit more colour to this painting, but that is only my opinion.
The painting of the two birds in this piece definitely shows that cranes dwell together a long lifetime though the composition of the two birds. The branch above the two birds are incredibly detail. The outline of the birds are not simple outlines, they do reflect that the white cranes have feathers without adding too many lines for the detail of their feathers. This is a simple painting yet it is eye catching and the subject of this piece suits the theme love.
